NISP was the world’s first national industrial symbiosis programme.

NISP was originated as three pilot schemes in Scotland, West Midlands and Yorkshire & Humberside in 2003.

One of the reasons for the programme’s overwhelming success is the way in which it was managed and delivered. The programme operated with nationally coordinated operational focus underpinned by a local delivery structure. It is the NISP teams’ knowledge and insight into specific regional agendas on the economy and environment that enabled the programme to have such a positive impact across the UK.

Through the NISP network, NISP identifies mutually profitable transactions between companies so that underused or undervalued resources (including energy, waste, water and logistics) are brought into productive use. NISP participants included micros, small and medium businesses (SMEs) and multinational/corporates from every industry sector. International Synergies has developed proven industrial symbiosis methodology, tools and systems that can be applied at any scale and in any economy based around the world’s first National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP®).

NISP provides a proven blueprint that can be adapted and replicated anywhere in the world. Since 2007 International Synergies has exported its NISP® model to more than 20 countries at a national or regional level through a capacity building model. Additionally, International Synergies has provided strategic industrial symbiosis consultancy and readiness training to over 10 additional countries.

The Circular Start into Business project – CircularStart – is a 2-year ERASMUS+ Strategic Partnership that brings together 9 partners from four EU countries to address the need of know-how and competences of start-ups and entrepreneurs in the field of Circular Economy, to move towards more sustainable and circular Business Models.

The aim of CircularStart is to support incubators, trainers and consultants in sustainability and circularity training of start-ups, through the development of an interactive guidance tool supported by eLearning resources, so that start-ups increase their competences to understand, evaluate and improve sustainability and Circular Economy issues related to their Business Models.

Why this project now? The idea of CircularStart is grounded on the recognition that there is a lack of know-how and training of start-ups and entrepreneurs in the field of sustainability, Circular Economy and their opportunities. On the one hand, mission-driven entrepreneurs are bringing fresh, disruptive, sustainable innovations to market; sustainability-oriented incubators are appearing too. However, this phenomenon is far from mainstream and not methodologically implemented.

Main activities of the project, include the following ones:

  • Design of a guidance tool which integrates CE aspects into the development of BMs.
  • Elaboration of eLearning resources focused on the integration of sustainability in BMs.
  • Use and test of the training materials at expert business coaches’ level and start-up level.
  • Establishment of criteria to evaluate the circularity of BMs.

CircularStart is an Erasmus+ Project funded by the European Commission through SEPIE, the Spanish National Agency (Grant Agreement: 2019-1-ES01-KA202-065625).

A new invitation to the 15th IRDO International Scientific and Business Conference entitled SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND CURRENT CHALLENGES 2020: PERSONAL AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR SUSTAINABLE FUTURE, to be held on 4 and 5 June 2020 in Maribor, Slovenia.

Due to the crisis and pandemic situation the conference will be held online (via Zoom or similar application). The physical presence of authors and participants in Maribor (Slovenia) is not needed.

The main purpose of the conference is to look for connections between human responsibility towards society and ourselves for our shared sustainable future. The EU has adopted a number of different strategies for the path out of the crisis, and the most recent one is the European Green Deal. More content on this topic can be found here:

Corporate Social Responsibility & Responsible Business Conduct

Our participation in the conference will be in the spirit of the UN Transforming our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, incorporating 17 sustainable development goals. These are also enshrined in the Republic of Slovenia’s Development Strategy until 2030, but cannot be achieved without personal and social responsibility.

The 2020 Conference aims to provide a broader insight into what researchers, teachers, managers, and others, can do to integrate personal and social responsibility into the social and natural environment in which we operate.

Therefore, with a view to contributing to a sustainable future as a pathway from the current crisis, we will:

•        Discuss methods for developing concepts of personal responsibility in order to align them with the current developments in it and the necessary holistic development in the social, ecological and business environment, with particular emphasis on reflexive behavior, interdependence and creative collaboration.

•        Present examples of personally responsible behavior by individuals and groups in business, government and non-governmental organizations or active citizenship, and evaluate how to rethink standard processes from several aspects and how.

•        Introduce aspects of personal responsibility and its empowerment, e.g. caring for a healthy lifestyle, nutrition, sports, sleep, spirituality, the economic aspect of family care, self-care, ethics, education, culture, social, love, partnership, parenting and other aspects of personal and social responsibility that support planning, implementation and optimization socially responsible behavior.

By sharing experience, theoretical and practical, we will help participants find the right path to socially responsible behavior in families and in organizations, for-profit and non-profit.

Therefore, we invite you to the conference as authors and/or listeners to share your experience, views and suggestions with other participants, including scientific and other researchers, top consultants, other professionals and experienced practitioners who will attend this conference as listeners and/or as contributing authors.
